Panchayat president says regional transport officer undervalued the vehicles Executive Engineer: 21 vehicles auctioned for Rs. 10.41 lakh Chikmagalur: The Chikmagalur zilla panchayat, in a special meeting held here on Saturday, decided to approach the Lokayukta to conduct an inquiry into the auction of old vehicles belonging to the panchayat. Gayathri Shanthegowda, panchayat president, made this announcement after a detailed discussion on the issue after it was raised by panchayat member P.J. Antony. Mr. Antony said two vehicles have been removed by the bidder from N.R. Pura. Pointing out that the standing committee of the panchayat had recommended that a fresh auction should be held, Ms. Gayathri Shanthegowda sought details from the concerned official. She said the regional transport officer had undervalued the vehicles and she would call for a revaluation. The Executive Engineer said the vehicles were claimed before the standing committee’s decision was made known. He informed the meeting that 21 vehicles including lorries and road rollers had been auctioned for Rs. 10.41 lakh. Ramanna, Chief Executive Officer of the panchayat, said the file had been pending for several years and this decision was taken following a request from the Engineering Department. He said the Government had entrusted the CEO with the power to take this decision in 2005. The special meeting, which was convened specifically to discuss the modalities to implement drinking water schemes in summer, was not able to reach a conclusion on the issue. Mr. Ramanna said the Government had issued a circular stating that action plans for drinking water schemes should not be made. He said he will forward the list of drinking water schemes prepared by the members to the Government.
