Focus on bio-resources

Coimbatore: Exploitation of plants, animals and microbes will have a negative impact on the environment, said Umesh Kumar, Deputy Director, Central Food and Technological Institute, Mysore.

He was speaking at a seminar on conservation and management of bio-resources at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women.

He said that bio-resources are necessary for the progress of a country.

There was an urgent need to focus on bio resources for posterity.

In various fields of science like bio-physics, bio-chemistry, bio-technology, biology is the major component, though it lagged behind for sometime, but now its importance had been realised. Microbes play an important role in our daily life.Fermented foods like idli, dosa and butter milk contains live bacteria which prevent the binding of bacterium causing intestinal cancer.

Dr. Hoysala N. Chanakya, Centre for Sustainable Technologies, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore delivered a lecture on the utilisation of bio resources for human welfare.

Dr.Pulliah, Krishna Devaraya University, Anantapur spoke on bio-diversity and its conservation.
