Wear helmet or seat belt without fail, warns CP

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The city police have made it clear that cases would be registered against those who fail to wear helmet/seatbelt while riding/driving vehicles, as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Police Commissioner (in-charge) Mahesh M. Bhagwat said in a statement on Saturday that the government promulgated an Act making wearing of helmets and seatbelts mandatory in all the important cities way back in 2006. The traffic wing of the police department was ensuring the implementation of the Act.

Referring to the backdrop of the promulgation the Act, Mr. Bhagwat said that many scientific studies indicated that most of the deaths in road accidents were taking place due to the failure to wear helmet/seatbelt. “The studies done even after the implementation of the Act have indicated that most of the road accident victims were those who failed to wear helmet/seatbelt. They sustained severe head injuries in road accidents and succumbed to those injuries,” he said.

Safe practice

Mr. Bhagwat wanted people to keep in mind that the rule of wearing helmet/seatbelt was only for their personal safety and they must follow it. People of all sections, including government employees, advocates, people working in print and electronic media and in police department, must wear helmet/seatbelt, he said.
