Coimbatore: The Transport Department in association with Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Police recently conducted a drive against use of blaring air horns in buses and have decided to sustain the drive and focus on trucks as well. ComplaintsFollowing complaints from public and consumer organisations about the high decibel level of horns used by buses, the District Collector, P. Umanath ordered for a crack down. Transport Department officials, namely the Regional Transport Officers, P. Harikrishnan (North), Jagannathan (Central) and Natarajan (South) along with Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), N. Kamini and District Environment Engineer, Elango raided the Gandhipuram bus stand in the morning and carried out a surprise check. The rules that have been made are very clear that horns with decibel level of 90 could be used in vehicles. The check was conducted on as many as 80 buses of which nearly 41 of them were found to be using air horns and the highest decibel level was found to be 123. IncreaseWhile in cases of buses having slightest increase in decibel level, notices were served. Officials have planned to conduct the check against use of air horns on all arterial roads and focus on trucks as well and the drive would be sustained.
