“According to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, IDP camps are illegal”

CHENNAI: Electing Sarath Fonseka, former Commander of the Army, as President will be a golden opportunity to establish the rule of democracy in Sri Lanka, said Jayalath Jayawardana, former Minister and assistant secretary of the United National Party (UNP).

TNA’s support

Dr. Jayawardana told reporters that for the first time, the UNP, JVP, Sri Lankan Muslim Congress and other parties were supporting a common candidate as the foremost priority was to establish the rule of law. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) had also announced support to Gen. Fonseka.

He said Gen. Fonseka had agreed to give up the executive powers of the President and was ready to implement 17th amendment to the Constitution, restore the police commission, judicial commission, public service commission and an independent election commission.

Asked about the views of the MPs from Tamil Nadu, who had talked positively about the condition in the camps for the Internally Displaced People (IDP), Dr. Jayawardana, who held the portfolio of rehabilitation in the UNP government, said he would not agree with them.

“Of course, the MPs from Tamil Nadu have the rights to express their opinion. According to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, IDP camps are illegal,” he stressed.
