TEMPTING: Textile and handloom products being exhibited at the ongoing Tex Fair Kerala in Kannur. KANNUR: ‘Tex Fair Kerala, 2010,’ being held here under the aegis of the Department of Industries and Commerce, aims at giving a new lease of life to the textile sector. One of the major problems being faced by the sector, especially traditional handlooms, in the State is the inability to generate a steady and sustainable income. The fair attempts to expand the market as a practical solution to the hurdle. The fair is being coordinated by the Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion, Thiruvananthapuram, in association with the District Industries Centre, the Textile Committee, the National Institute of Fashion Technology, the Entrepreneurs’ Development Institute (EDI), Ahmedabad, and the Apparel Global Consulting (AGC), Tirupur. It has three sessions — exhibition-cum-sales of textile products, business meet and exhibition by support service providers for the sector. “The prime focus will be on building linkages between beneficiaries in the sector and buyers as well as technical and other support service providers,” S. Santhosh, Deputy General Manager of the bureau, said. While the exhibition and business meet sessions have 71 and 53 participants, respectively, mostly handloom producers in the cooperative sector, 34 machinery manufacturers and other support service providers are participating in the fair, he added. The organisers said the Department of Handloom and Textiles under the Industries Department selected the participants based on the quality and design of the products as well as the skill of the weavers. It is ensured that the participants get an arena to showcase their products and hold one-to-one discussions with business visitors. This is expected to draw significant suggestions from visitors, they hope. The participants in the fair include the Institute of Handloom Textile Technology (IHTT), Thottada, Kerala Garments, Hanveev, Dinesh Garments, Texfed and Hantex, in addition to an array of weavers’ cooperative societies. The IHTT has opened a theme pavilion at the Fair. A fashion show will be organised by NIFT, Chennai, on Monday as part of the business meet and awards will be distributed to innovative weavers.
