Orissa
Both of them are in love and wanted to marry, says Superintendent of Police BERHAMPUR: Frustrated by the violent ideology, two Maoists, including a woman cadre, surrendered in Rayagada district of south Orissa on Sunday. The surrendered naxalites were Dharma Rao Kumblika alias Srinu and Vanaja alias Uma. They were area committee members of the Srikakulam-Koraput division of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation. Speaking to The Hindu, Rayagada Superintendent of Police Anup Krishna said it was for the first time for any Maoist cadres working in Andhra Pradesh-based naxal wing to surrender in Orissa. Both of them were in love and wanted to marry and start a peaceful family life, said Mr. Krishna. They claimed that the ideology which had attracted them to the naxal movement was non-existent in the Maoist outfit, which led to their frustration. Srinu was from Murteli village under Chandili police station limits in Rayagada district. Vanaja was from Srirampeta Mandalam of the Srikakulam district in adjoining Andhra Pradesh. Both of them joined the naxal organisation in 2003. Surrender of Srinu and Vanaja is expected to spill much beans regarding naxal operations in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. Both of them were involved in the attack on Nayagarh town and armoury in 2008, attack on R. Udaygiri town in 2006 and attack on Nalco hilltop mines at Damanjodi in 2009. Apart from it, they were also involved in several other cases of murder and landmine blasts in south Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. It may be noted that during past year, a series of hardcore naxal cadres surrendered in Rayagada district. On December 30, an 18-year-old woman Maoist, Laxmi Pidkaka alias Sunita, surrendered to escape from a forced marriage to a cadre from Chhattisgarh. Among the other surrenders there were two other Maoist couples. Surendra Brekada (20) and his wife Rubi Pidikaka (19) alias Jaya had surrendered to start a peaceful married life.
