Chargers eyeing pacers

V.V. Subrahmanyam

IPL-3 auctions to be held tomorrow in Mumbai

HYDERABAD: New Zealand’s just-retired fast bowler Shane Bond, Pakistani Abdul Razzak, Caribbean pace sensation Kemar Roach and his teammate, big-hitting Kieron Pollard are on the radar of Deccan Chargers to recruit through auction for the third edition of the Indian Premier League (March 12 to April 25).

The defending champion is clearly gunning for a fast bowler as a replacement for Fidel Edwards whose availability is doubtful for the full IPL season given his national commitments.

The auction is scheduled on Tuesday in Mumbai and is to be telecast live on ESPN. “Since the flamboyant Dwayne Smith is already there to bolster the batting and with Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds certainties, we would like to go in for a fast bowler. Since Zimbabwe is touring West Indies around the same time Fidel is likely unavailable for the entire IPL,” says a top official of the Chargers.

“With both Chamara Silva and Nuwan Zoysa out of Chargers’ camp, only two more foreign cricketers can be taken. Or else, given the choice, Kemar Roach who floored Ricky Ponting with a left-elbow injury recently in the Perth Test at 146kmph should have been an automatic choice,” he remarked.

T20 tourney

The Chargers has also scheduled a DC Twenty-20 Cup tournament next week with a winner’s prize of Rs. 1 lakh besides a ‘player of the series’ award of Rs. 25,000. The event features besides Chargers, three Hyderabad teams (seniors, under-22 and under-19), Orissa and Andhra.
