BANGALORE: The Karnataka Joint Action Committee of Backward Classes, Dalits and Minorities on Saturday urged the State Government to withdraw the land allotted to the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises (NICE) which had taken up Bangalore-Mysore Corridor project and Peripheral road surrounding Bangalore. The Committee accused the NICE of forcibly acquiring lands from poor farmers for ‘real estate’ purposes and demanded a probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Committee president Krishna Naik told presspersons here on Sunday that NICE was allegedly making money by pledging the lands acquired from farmers. The State Government was acquiring lands to transfer it to NICE company and the compensation being paid was too meagre. “Compensation ranging between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh an acre was being paid while the market value of such land amounted to several crores of rupees. By acquiring land, Government was pushing the poor Dalits and backward classes to streets,” he said. Mr. Naik said the Government should immediately cancel the project and bring out a White Paper to present the truth before public. “We demand the Government to refer the NICE project to CBI for a probe. Or else, the members of the committee will resort to agitations and draw the attention of Governor H.R. Bharwdaj on the matter,” he said.
