COMMITMENT REAFFIRMED: Speaker K.G. Bopaiah performing guddali puja for roadworks at Kavadi village in Kodagu district on Monday. Madikeri: Assuming charge as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will not come in the way of initiating development works in Kodagu district, K.G. Bopaiah said on Monday. The Speaker said he would handle the new responsibility with dignity and discharge duty in an impartial manner. Mr. Bopaiah was addressing a gathering at a felicitation to him at the Machimanda family ‘ain mane’ (ancestral home) at Kavadi village near Ammathi in Virajpet taluk of the district, a release said here. Peoples’ faith in him was mainly responsible for him to become the Speaker. He had not hankered after it, Mr. Bopaiah said and added that he would live up to the expectations of all. Mr. Bopaiah expressed gratefulness to the people of the district and said felicitations would make him stronger, yet to work with humility. A huge amount of government funds and grants were being received by Kodagu district, Mr. Bopaiah said. Development process would be taken up with the cooperation of the MLAs and MLCs hailing from the district. Mr. Bopaiah performed guddali puja for initiating the Ammathi-Kavadi-Vontiangadi roadwork being taken up at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh. Development works such as roads and drinking water were being taken up at Kavadi at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh, he said. The State Government’s fund allocated in the previous budget for laying a synthetic hockey playing surface would be utilised for laying the artificial playing surface at Ponnampet as decided earlier, Mr. Bopaiah said. The facility would help the wards of the Sports School run by the zilla panchayat at Ponnampet and conduct Kodava family hockey tournaments there, he said. Machimanda Aiyappa presided over the function while Suresh Aiyappa welcomed the gathering. Gonicoppa APMC president Bose, who gave an introductory speech, apprised Mr. Bopaiah of the expectations of the people of Virajpet constituency from him. Member of the zilla panchayat from Ammathi Kollira Dharmaja and BJP functionary Ravi Kushalappa were present.
