AnointED: Lakshmivara Tirtha being taken in a procession in Udupi on Monday.

Udupi: Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami of the Shiroor Math ascended the Paryaya (Sarvajna) Peetha at the Sri Krishna Math/Temple here on Monday. This is his third Paryaya.

On his arrival in Udupi early in the morning, he was welcomed by a large number of devotees at Joddu Katte. At 5.35 a.m., a grand procession began from Jodu Katte.

Devotees carried the chief deity of Shiroor Math, Sri Anna Vittala, around in a palanquin. Leaders of the Astha Maths, also seated in palanquins, followed, with Lakshmivara Tirtha leading them. They included Visvesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Math, Vidyasagar Tirtha Swami of Krishnapur Math, Vidyadheesha Tirtha Swami of Palimar Math, Vishwaprasanna Tirtha, junior swami of Pejawar Math, Vidyavallabha Tirtha of Kaniyur Math and Vishwavallabha Tirtha of Sode Math.

Lakshmivara Tirtha proceeded to the Kanakana Kindi and had darshan of the idol of Krishna. When he arrived at the entrance to the Sri Krishna temple, he was welcomed by the outgoing swami, Sugunendra Tirtha of Puttige Math.

Both then went to the Madhwa Sarovara, washed their feet, and had darshan of the goddess Bhagirathi. After that they entered the Sri Krishna Math/Temple and had darshan of the idol of Krishna.

Both then entered the Simhasana Shala. Sugunendra Tirtha handed over to Lakshmivara Tirtha the ‘Akshaya patre’ and ‘sattuga’ (a vessel and a ladle dating back to the time of Sri Madhwacharya) and the keys to the sanctum sanctorum, marking the formal transfer of authority from one math to the other. Lakshmivara Tirtha ascended the Paryaya Peetha at 8.30 a.m.
