Plea to save age-old temple

Staff Reporter

ELURU: Collector A. Vani Prasad on Monday received a petition from a section of people from Kamavarapukota during the ‘Prajavani’ programme to save the historical Sri Bhardhrakali-Veerabhadhra Swamy temple in the area from encroachers. Some people dismantled the temple compound and started encroaching upon the premises for construction of houses, they said. The temple is believed to have been built by a king named Vishnukundinudu during the 18th century. In March last, a portion of the land was already subjected to encroachment, forcing the villagers to move the court. Responding to the petition, the court constituted a committee with experts from the department of Archaeology to study the issue and submit a report. There seemed to be no end to the encroachments even after the committee’s visit, the villagers regretted.
