‘Complete Rajanahalli lift irrigation project’

Staff Correspondent

Activists say land for project has not been acquired

Project aimed at filling 22 tanks in Davangere district with the water from the Tungabhadra

The people of the 30 villages in the district will get drinking water if the project is completed

Davangere: The people of over 30 villages of Davangere district under the banner of “Ippatharedu Keregala Horata Samiti” took out a procession here on Monday urging the Government speed up work on the Rajanahalli lift irrigation project to fill 22 tanks in the dry belt of Davangere district with water from the Tungabhadra.

The agitators raised slogans against the Government and also against the Irrigation Department for not completing the work on the project as per schedule. They demanded the Government to implement the project in order to provide drinking water to the people of over 30 villages of Davangere district.

They later submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

The memorandum said that 12.29 acres of land in Halasabalu village in Harihar taluk, which was earmarked for construction of a jackwell, was not yet acquired. Similarly, site is yet to be identified for the installation of the second jackwell.

Since a long pipeline has to be laid along the line of the NH-4, the Government has to obtain permission from the National Highways Authority of India.

Since huge power is required to complete the project, the authorities need to seek 66 kV dedicated line for the project. And as the pipeline will pass through the forest lands in Anegod and Hebbal permission need to be obtained from the Department of Forests.

Ahead of all other work to implement the project, the authorities need to initiate steps to remove silt from the 22 tanks and fence them.

According to the agitators, though the Rajanahalli lift irrigation project was taken up a couple of years ago, the departments concerned have not even completed work on land acquisition of the implementation of the project.

Kotresh Naika, general secretary of the samiti and Nijalingappa were among others who participated in the agitation.
