MYSORE: Members of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) and other citizens will conduct the “last rites” on Wednesday to “mourn” the 32 trees that were axed by a frenzied mob on Lalitha Mahal Palace Road recently. A hit-and-run accident in which a Mysore City Corporation (MCC) employee Swami (57) died developed into mob hysteria, allegedly instigated by a few elected representatives keen to have a double road that entailed felling nearly 200 trees. Bhamy V. Shenoy of the MGP in a release said Conservator of Forest B.P. Ravi had been informed and that he had agreed to participate in the event. “He has also agreed to plant saplings where the trees were felled as a mark of respect,” said Dr. Shenoy. MGP has appealed to the public to take part in the function which will be held near the arch gate on Lalitha Mahal Palace Road at 11 a.m., in large numbers. The MGP said there will be no raising of slogans, no criticism of any group and the Forest Department would be asked to supply saplings to those who wanted to plant them to commemorate the felled trees and the deceased MCC employee. MGP has urged students to participate in the function. For details, call the MGP at 2515150. Meanwhile, a citizens group led by the Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM) met Commissioner of Police Sunil Agarwal to impress the seriousness of the issue upon him. The Commissioner refuted suggestions that the police did not file an FIR. He said that the investigation was under way and the guilty persons would be prosecuted.
