Shooting
Gives him the option of competing in the third or fourth World Cup this season NEW DELHI: The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has agreed to concede some ground for World and Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra by giving him the option of competing in the third or fourth World Cup this season. NRAI Secretary-General Baljit Singh Sethi said Bindra would be allowed to compete in one of the World Cups to be held in Fort Benning and Belgrade, following a discussion with the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Suresh Kalmadi, here on Monday. “We are likely to have trials in June for the World Championship and in August for the Commonwealth Games. Abhinav has to come for those trials. The performance in World Cup will also be considered for selection,” said Sethi. The NRAI was willing to consider Bindra’s scores in ISSF-recognised competitions for his selection, he added. It was made clear that there was no question of selecting Bindra for the Commonwealth shooting championship in February or the first two World Cups. But the champion shooter himself had categorically stated that those events did not fall into his plan towards defending his world crown.
