Three held for robbery at knife-point

NEW DELHI: Three persons who allegedly robbed passengers at knife-point after offering to drop them in their auto-rickshaw have been arrested in Model Town here.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team laid a trap near a bus stand over the weekend and signalled an auto-rickshaw to stop.

The police overpowered three persons, later identified as Sonu (23), Sajid (22) and Nadeem (21), in the auto-rickshaw but driver Mehtab managed to escape. The vehicle was seized.

During interrogation, the three purportedly confessed to involvement in a robbery case registered at the Kashmere Gate police station. The police claim to have recovered Rs.70,000 in cash and some stolen jewellery.

The police said the gang used to target people in Delhi and neighbouring areas waiting for a conveyance outside bus stands and railway stations. The accused would offer to drop the passengers usually carrying bags and valuables and them rob them at knife-point at an isolated place. All three accused have previous criminal involvements, the police said.

Sonu, a fruit vendor, is the gang leader. Sajid is an auto-driver while Nadeem is a tailor.
