Ration shops in Chennai bifurcated

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: To ensure a hassle-free distribution of essential commodities to the card-holders through public distribution system, the State Co-operative Societies has bifurcated 138 out of 239 fair price shops in the city in the last three months.

As many as 80 fair price shops in Chennai south and 58 in Chennai north have more than 2,000 card-holders. The Co-operative Societies have more than 950 fair price shops in the city. The bifurcation process of the remaining shops will be completed in a month’s time.

According to an official, opening new shops in the city was not a problem, as they just need some furniture, electronic weighing machine, billing machine and other essential items. On the other hand, they were not able to get adequate space in places such as K.K. Nagar, T. Nagar, Anna Nagar and Raja Annamalaipuram. The official said their next priority was to identify fair price shops having more than 1,500 cards.
