Study on textile workers

R. Vimal Kumar

Tirupur: The Economics department at the Government Chikkanna Arts College here is all set to carry out a research on ‘social security for unorganised textile workers employed in Tirupur knitwear cluster’ starting this month.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had allocated a grant of Rs. 6.62 lakh to carry out the two-year project.

College principal A. Mohammed Kani told The Hindu that the study would gain significance as social security cover extended to the workers in the cluster had always been a matter of concern since majority of the about three lakh workforce in the cluster were in temporary payrolls without adequate job or social security.

A research team headed by M.K.Vinayagamoorthy, head, department of economics at the college, would come out with a comprehensive report suggesting mechanisms and strategies to meet the actual social security needs of the textile workers in the cluster in the areas of employment, income and health.

“We will also be incorporating the feedback on the risk management mechanisms that are frequently used by unorganised sector workers at present besides their willingness to participate in contributory social security schemes,” Dr. Vinayagamoorthy said.

The final project report would be submitted to the Union Government through UGC so that policy formulations could be made prioritizing the sector-specific needs of the workers.

“At present, the policy makers are mostly confronted with high operational costs when initiating the social security funds owing to lack of clear information on the actual needs of the workers here,” Dr. Vinayagamoorthy pointed out.
