Focus on tuber crops at flower show

IN BLOOM: It is a riot of colours at the ongoing Khadigram Flower Show, 2010, at the Khadi Gramodyog Emporium at S.M. Street in Kozhikode.

KOZHIKODE: The 34th Calicut Flower Show organised by the Calicut Agri Horticultural Society will be held from January 22 to 27 at the Marine Ground here.

Mayor M. Bhaskaran will inaugurate the six-day event at 5.30 p.m. on January 22 at a function to be presided over by CAHS chairman and District Collector P.B. Salim.

On January 21, a vehicle procession proclaiming the start of the event will be taken out from Gandhi Park at 4.30 p.m. to various destinations in the city. The flower show will also include seminars and classes, sale of seeds, seedlings and saplings besides various competitions and stalls put up by various government and private entities.

Special focus will be given to tuber crops, as 2010 is being celebrated as the year for promoting tubers. Stalls exhibiting and selling tubers like tapioca, turmeric, yam, ginger, etc. will be erected with spotlight on promoting the planting of these crops in urban areas.

Research products

The Malabar Botanical Garden will exhibit a rare collection of plants at the event. The Calicut University will showcase plants and crops which are products of research at their stall.

The Arecanut and Spices Research Centre will conduct three classes on January 22, 23 and 25 on aromatic and medicinal plant farming and floriculture for a select group of farmers.

The Koothali Agricultural Farm will exhibit coconuts, arecanut and fruits which are the product of research at the government stall. A stall exhibiting bamboo products and a vegetable stall by the Vegetable Fruit and Promotion Council of Kerala (VFPCK) are other attractions at the show. Ten nurseries from within and outside the State will also be exhibiting their plants at the event.

Contests

A painting contest for children, floral arrangement contests, sale of vegetable seedlings at low prices and contests for those involved in gardening will be held. Entry fee is Rs.20 for adults and Rs.10 for children. Entry is open between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

A number of cultural events have also been planned at the venue.

Khadigram show

Khadigram Flower Show, 2010, got underway on January 20 at the Khadi Gramodyog Emporium at S.M. Street. The flower show will conclude on January 30.
