State Government urged to appoint special educators

Staff Reporter

It is the duty of the State Government to run special schools, say protestors

SALEM: Special educators, differently-abled children and their parents organised a human chain here on Wednesday urging the State government to appoint special educators with time scale of pay.

Protesting under the banner of All India Confederation of Organisations for Persons with Mental Disability, participants said that it was estimated that the Tamil Nadu was having over five lakh differently-abled children.

It was the responsibility of the State Government to run special schools for these children.

But the Tamil Nadu government was running only one school under its control.

It had allowed the non-governmental organisations (NGO) to open and run the special schools.

Appointed

The government had appointed special educators with time scale of pay in a few schools run by the NGOs till 1992.

Later, it had not created any special educator posts.

While the State required over 10,000 special educators, the present youth were not showing interest in choosing this field as the NGO were paying meagre salary.

Following requests made by the confederation, the authorities recommended the State Government to create 750 special educators post.

But this recommendation was yet to be considered, Confederation members said.

Besides this, they wanted the government to create special educator posts and provide them with time scale of pay.

Differently-abled children and their parents from Salem, Erode and Namakkal district participated in the protests that had been organised.
