State seeks Rs.26.12 cr. for dairy schemes

State in forefront with a procurement of 26.30 lakh litres of milk a day, says Minister
CHENNAI: The State government has sent proposals worth Rs.26.12 crore to the Centre for implementing various dairy development schemes in the State.
Addressing a meeting of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Ministers of States convened by the Centre in New Delhi on Wednesday, Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan said Tamil Nadu was in the forefront in dairy development with a procurement of 26.30 lakh litres of milk per day, of which 22.50 lakh litres were being sold.
To increase the milk procurement further and to improve the quality of milk, the State had written to the Union Ministry of Food Processing seeking Rs.270 lakh for setting up 10 bulk milk coolers, Rs.810 lakh for purchasing 45 milk tankers, Rs. 80 lakh for constructing refrigeration rooms, Rs. 312.50 lakh for purchasing 22 refrigerator vans, 130 lakh for setting up high-tech milk parlours and Rs. 1,000 lakh for installing five ice-cream manufacturing units in the State.
The Minister appealed to the Centre for early clearance of funds for the above schemes.
