CHENNAI: The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) has made questions for the 8th All India School Education Survey (AISES) more specific, according to Davinder K. Vaid, Professor and Head, Department of Educational Surveys and Date Processing, NCERT. As many as 32 Chief Education Officers (CEOs) from the State participated in a training programme for the survey here on Wednesday. Speaking to TheHindu, Prof. Vaid said while the AISES conducted earlier looked at aspects such as students with disability, the 8th survey would get into details such as the degree of disability. “Earlier, it would have been sufficient to answer a question on school playground with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Now, schools would have to furnish details about the area of the playground.” The AISES is one of the largest surveys, conducted by the NCERT in collaboration with several other agencies. The primary objective is to provide inputs to the Planning Commission besides developing a data base to calculate and analyse a set of educational indicators that describe the current status of school education in the country. “We hope to release the flash statistics later this year and the final statistics by March 2011. If the States cooperate, we can meet this deadline,” Prof. Vaid said. For the first time, questions on school results at the terminal level, area of the school garden and dropouts, using the census method, have been included for the survey, he said. “The State Survey Officers attended a training programme in New Delhi. This round of training is for CEOs, who will, in turn, train DEOs. They will later train AEOs, who will train the heads of schools under their supervision.” Tamil Nadu has sought Rs.67 lakh for the survey. Director of School Education P. Perumalsamy will be the Director of Survey. Joint Director (Secondary) D. Rajendran is the SSO. School Education Secretary M. Kutralingam inaugurated the programme.
