Police lathicharge agitating staff in U.P.

They were demanding pay and allowances on a par with Central government employees

LUCKNOW: Several agitating government employees were injured when the police lathicharged them to thwart their march towards the Vidhan Sabha here on Thursday. Some policemen were also injured.
The employees have been demanding parity in salary structure and allowances with those of the Central government employees.
Vehicles damaged
The agitation was organised by the joint front of State employees and teachers. They threw stones and missiles and damaged some vehicles and city buses during the clash near Indira Bhawan on Ashok Marg and in Hazratganj.
A police spokesperson said the agitators had planned to stage a demonstration at the Jhule Lal Park, but reached the Hazratganj crossing and blocked the traffic.
Water cannon was first used to disperse the mob. Then the police used mild force to stop agitators from marching towards the Vidhan Sabha, the police spokesperson said.
The Rajya Karamchari Mahasangh said about 300 employees were injured in the lathi charge.
