Joshna in semifinals

CHENNAI: The top seeds, India’s Joshna Chinappa and South Africa’s Stephen Coppinger, advanced to the semifinals of the WISPA and PSA Challenger events at the Indian Squash Academy here on Thursday.

Joshna needed four games to get past England’s Lauren Selby while Coppinger needed three in his 42-minute win over Dane Kristian Frost Olessen.

The Indian girl lost the third game before sealing a place in the semifinals with an 11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-1 victory in 33 minutes. She will meet third-seeded Lauren Siddal in the semifinal on Friday.

In the other WISPA quarterfinals, second-seeded Joey Chan of Hong Kong recorded an emphatic win in straight games over French girl Colin Aumard. Chan will now face South Africa’s Siyoli Waters.

The men’s PSA semifinals will be contested between Robbie Temple, the second seed, and Abdullah Al Mezayen, the fourth seed. Coppinger meets unseeded Amr Khaled Khalifa of Egypt in the other semifinal.

Siddharth Suchde lost a close quarterfinal against second-seeded Robbie Temple of England, going down 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7 in 54 minutes.

PSA: Stephen Coppinger (RSA) bt Kristian Frost Olessen (Den) 11-2, 13-11, 12-10; Amr Khaled Khalifa (Egy) bt Karim Samy (Egy) 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 11-3.

Abdullah Al Mezayen (Kuw) bt Anson Kwong (HK) 11-4, 13-11, 11-7; Robbie Temple (Eng) bt Siddharth Suchde (Ind) 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7.

WISPA: Joshna Chinappa (Ind) bt Lauren Selby (Eng) 11-7, 11-6, 8-11, 11-1; Lauren Siddal (Eng) bt Faustine Gilles (Fra) 11-2, 11-7, 11-3.

Siyoli Waters (RSA) bt Laura Pomportes (Fra) 11-6, 11-9, 16-14; Joey Chan (HK) bt Colin Aumard (Fra) 11-1, 11-8, 11-9.
