Three set meet records

VISAKHAPATNAM: Three Karnataka swimmers — A. Ajay in Group II 1500m freestyle, Bhoomi R. Motawani in Group II 100m breaststroke and Damini K. Gowda in 100m freestyle, set meet records on the first day of the south zone aquatic championships for boys and girls at the Aqua Sports Complex here on Friday.

Bhoomi clocked 1:23.69 to better her one-year-old record of 1:29.67. Ajay erased the four-year-old record of 18:08.59 set by A.P. Gagan of Karnataka, with a timing of 17:46.15. Damini won her final in 1:08.32 to better Karnataka swimmer V. Malavika’s 2009 timing of 1:10.36.

Tamil Nadu won 21 events and Karnataka 15 on the first day. Host Andhra Pradesh picked up gold through G. Pranathi Bhagawathi in the 100m breaststroke.

Kerala boys and girls won their water polo matches, beating Tamil Nadu 4-0 and Karnataka 5-3 respectively. Karnataka boys blanked AP 5-0 and Tamil Nadu girls defeated AP 5-0.
