THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 3,674 persons were killed, 24,188 suffered serious injuries and 16,221 suffered minor injuries in 35,337 road accidents that took place in the State in 2009. The number of persons killed, those who suffered serious and minor injuries, and the number of accidents have come down in 2009 compared to the figures in 2008, according to the statistics compiled by the State Crime Records Bureau. In 2008, as many as 3,897 persons had been killed, 25,605 had suffered grievous injuries and 18,236 suffered minor injuries in 37,263 road accidents. In 2007, 3,778 persons had died, 26977 suffered serious injuries and 21,269 received minor injuries in 39,917 road accidents. Highest in capitalAmong the districts, Thiruvananthapuram tops the table with 454 deaths in 2009. Ernakulam is second with 430 deaths. Thrissur with 388 deaths, Alappuzha with 373 deaths and Palakkad with 326 deaths came next. Wayanad reported the lowest with 63 deaths. In the number of road accidents, Ernakulam district tops the list with 5,453 incidents followed by Thiruvananthapuram with 4,410 accidents. Thrissur registered 4,046 accidents, Alappuzha, 2,929, Kozhikode, 2,903, and Malappuram, 2,670 cases. Wayanad reported the lowest with 603 road accidents. Among the seriously injured, Ernakulam tops the list with 3,542 cases. Thiruvananthapuram comes next with 3,465, Thrissur, 2,839, Kottayam 1,981, Alappuzha, 1.978, and the lowest in Wayanad with 380 cases. The national highways in the State witnessed 9,615 road accidents, State highways accounted for 6,253 accidents and other roads 19,469 accidents during the year. As many as 9,541 road accidents took place during night time and 25,796 accidents took place during day time. Ernakulam district reported the highest number of day time accidents, 3,974, and the highest number of night time accidents, 1479. As many as 15,319 two-wheelers were involved in the accidents. Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses were involved in 1,134 accidents, privates buses in 3,941, mini bus in 3,393, cars in 8,103, jeeps in 149 and autorickshaws in 5,615 accidents. The highest number of 282 accidents involving KSRTC buses had been reported from Thiruvananthapuram and the highest number of 635 accidents involving private buses had been reported from Kozhikode followed by Ernakulam with 611 road accidents.
