GUNTUR: Acharya Nagarjuna University Men’s team, with a couple of players representing the game at the country level, showed its class and emerged winner of the South West Zone Inter-University Handball Tournament on the university campus on Saturday defeating Osmania University and University of Kerala. In the morning session, the hosts beat Osmania University 28-11 in a game, which was one sided from the word go. Venkatesh and Sri Kumar of Acharya Nagarjuna University helped the team score goals below one minute of starting the game. So easy was the match that they preserved their energies for a tougher match in the afternoon against University of Kerala, which they won by 32-24 margin. Match between University of Kerala and LNUPE, Gwalior, the first-ever Physical Education University of India, was the most keenly fought with LNUPE maintaining a slender lead right from the beginning and University of Kerala equalling it twice, but seconds before the hooter a nice flying goal by LNUPE’s Dhirendra saw them win just by a margin of one goal 35-34. Girls teams from the LNUPE, University of Kerala, University of Pondicherry and the host ANU and Osmania teams cheered both sides in the second match of morning schedule, but LNUPE’s victory did not help them as they lost to ANU.
