Steps being taken to fulfil MCI requirements

Serena Josephine. M

PUDUCHERRY: The territorial administration is taking steps to fulfil the minimum requirements of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start first-year classes in the long-pending government medical college during the forthcoming academic year.

Official sources said attempts were being made to establish facilities for first-year students, including lecture halls, laboratories, accommodation and a 300-bed hospital in accordance with MCI norms.

“The minimum requirements for starting the first-year classes will be ready. Hostels have been completed and 70 per cent of the college building is ready. Besides, 60 per cent of the hospital block has been constructed. When the MCI comes for inspection, we should have a 300-bed running hospital on the campus,” sources said.

The MCI approval would be sought on a yearly basis, on the same lines of private medical colleges, an official source said, adding, “The MCI conducts yearly inspection, so we will be getting the nod for each year in a phased manner. The MCI does not necessitate infrastructure and other facilities for the entire five-year course period in the first year itself.”

With the MCI inspection slated before April 30, the government has expedited the work. One of this included posting available staff in the health sector on deputation in the government medical college. Soon after inspection, the MCI would submit a report to the Union Ministry of Health.

Only after obtaining approval can the government advertise for admissions for the first year.

“For key teaching posts, we will seek the willingness of available staff for deputation. Qualified people will be appointed as per MCI regulations. We have looked at all requirements of the MCI and are working towards meeting the criteria,” he said.
