Crackdown on illegal boards

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police will remove encroachments and illegal boards erected on the roadside which obstruct the field of vision of motorists.

Briefing presspersons after releasing traffic awareness stickers at the city police commissionerate here on Saturday, Commissioner of Police M.R. Ajithkumar said the drive would be carried out on the Kovalam-Kollam stretch that was being developed as a model road.

Mr. Ajithkumar said boards and other advertisements put up on the roadside, traffic islands and at main intersections by hotels, resorts, shops and other establishments were distracting drivers and obstruction their vision.

The police also plan to carry out a drive against illegal boards erected in the city.

The Kovalam-Kollam road is being converted into a model with the help of the police, the Public Works Department, user agencies and stakeholders.

Mr. Ajithkumar said bushes along some stretches of the road had been cleared. Bumps would be erected near the mouths of side roads that open on to main roads.

He said traffic stickers with various road safety messages would be pasted on public transport vehicles plying in the city.

Pamphlets would also be distributed to road users and those booked for various traffic offences.

The stickers were handed over to Mr. Ajithkumar by Victor Fernandes, General Manager, Kerala, Vodafone. Assistant Commissioners of Police, Traffic, K.S. Sreekumar and B. Varghese and Zonal Manager Vinod C were present.
