Minister laments decline in educational standards

Special Correspondent

KANNUR: Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran has said that Kerala is a major victim of decline in educational standards.

Inaugurating the valedictory function of the golden jubilee of the Ursuline Senior Secondary School here on Sunday, Mr. Ramachandran said that quality of education was plummeting every year. Acknowledging the yeomen service of the Church and its missionaries in the educational sector in the State, he said that number of Keralite students appearing in the all-India competitive examinations was coming down.

“Kerala should seriously consider ways to improve quality of education. A degree is not just a passport to get a job,” he said, adding that education would serve no purpose unless it made comprehensive changes in an individual.

Stressing the importance of value-based education system, the Minister said that education should equip students to understand humanity and strengthen secular awareness.

High Court judge R. Basant delivered the keynote address. Kannur Bishop Varghese Chakkalakkal presided over the function.
