“CPI will back AIADMK in Pennagaram by-poll” Plan to “gherao” Parliament on March 12
D.Pandian MADURAI: Bribing voters is the worst form of corruption and this practice needs to be curbed, according to D. Pandian, State secretary, Communist Party of India. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Pandian said that the Election Commission should be vested with more powers to control the State machinery during the elections. He opined that the Commission should look into the possibilities of utilising the administrative staff and police force from other States to conduct the elections. He said that the CPI would back the AIADMK in the Pennagaram by-poll.
The United Progressive Alliance government’s wrong economic policies had resulted in the skyrocketing of prices of essential commodities. While Foreign Direct Investment industries were thriving because of the subsidies given by the government, domestic units were facing acute crisis due to lack of financial support. The All India Trade Union Congress, Centre of Indian Trade Unions and Hind Mazdoor Sabha would stage a fill-the-jail agitation on March 5 to protest against the “anti-people” economic policies of the Centre. On March 12, the Left Parties planned to “gherao” Parliament. On the Mullaperiyar issue, Mr. Pandian said that the State government should come out with an unambiguous statement as there were apprehensions that the Kerala government was engaged in conducting land survey for construction of a new dam. “The DMK which is part of the ruling coalition at the Centre should ensure the riparian rights of the farmers through legal process.” On the deemed universities, he said the State was also equally responsible for the crisis as they failed to nip them in the bud.
