Chennai: The Chennai Open 2010 International Grand Master chess tournament was inaugurated here on Sunday as the entry number crossed 400. “We would have liked to do an event with Anand. Anyway, a great beginning is being made,” said Satyabrata Sahoo, IAS, Member Secretary of the SDAT while inaugurating the event with chess move 1.e4. “We would like to be associated with chess in the long run,” said V.K. Sharma, Zonal Manager of LIC which is one of the sponsors. “Tamil Nadu has a rich chess tradition and I hope this Chennai Open will go on to become an annual event,” said P.R. Venketramaraja, President of the TNSCA. “D.V. Sundar has done a wonderful job which I and other predecessors in the chess administration could not achieve,” said Manuel Aaron. India’s first Woman Grandmaster S. Vijayalakshmi has chosen to play in this event thereby making a comeback after she had given birth to a child a couple of years before. The first round starts on Monday morning at 9.30 a.m. at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium at Periamet in Chennai. Prominent among other Indians GMs are D. Barua, former British Champion R.B. Ramesh, J. Deepan Chakkaravarthy, former Commonwealth champion A. Kunte and National blitz champion R.R. Laxman. The bronze medal winning Indian team in the World Team Championship was felicitated in the opening ceremony. K. Sasikiran, S. Arun Prasad, B. Adhiban also received Rs. 5,001 each.
