Chhattisgarh and Delhi take the honours

INDORE: Delhi and Chhattisgarh won the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in the National junior basketball championship on Sunday.

Powered by Somvir (37) and Varinder (24), Delhi proved too good for Chhattisgarh as it raced to an 89-69 victory after leading 49-30 at halftime.

In the girls’ final, Chhattisgarh asserted itself with a thumping 97-64 triumph over Kerala.

The results:

Boys (final): Delhi 89 (Somvir 37, Varinder 24, Sukhjeet 10) bt Chhattisgarh 69 (Shyam Sundar 22, Sameer Rai 19, Ajay Pratap 12).

Third place: Madhya Pradesh 94 (Amit Kanarjee 26, Sunny Raut 21, Rajneesh Pandey 20) bt Punjab 83 (Parminder Singh 23, Amanjot Singh 19, Amritpal Singh 13).

Girls (final): Chhattisgarh 97 (Kavita 29, Aruna Kindo 19, Sangeeta Mondal 16) bt Kerala 64 (P.S. Neenu Mol 20, Anusha Anto 11, Soniya Joy 10).

Third place: Tamil Nadu 92 (U. Rahila Begum 21, R.S. Karpagam 19) bt Karnataka 69 (P.U. Navaneetha 16, M. Sandhya 14, Sagarika Shyam 13).

VR-5 is champion

Coimbatore’s VR-5, comprising Sreekrishnan, T.R. Krishnan, S.R.C. Sekar, Paul Abraham and Afshar Majeed, won the team of four duplicate event in the Lotus Trophy all-India bridge tournament which concluded at the Lotus Club in Kochi on Sunday evening.

Remun’s emerged champion in the Board-A-Match which R. Sreekrishnan and Afshar Majeed topped the pairs event.

Final placings: Team of four duplicate: 1.VR-5, Coimbatore (Sreekrishnan, T.R. Krishnan, S.R.C. Sekar, Paul Abraham, Afshar Majeed, 24 VP), 2. Coimbatore Blues (A.R. Prathapan, M.V. Rao, Rajagopal, C.K. Sreedhar, 106 VP), 3. Suri’s, Chennai (T.M. Suri, David, Jagadeesan, Narayana Ayyer, 104VP), 4. Vijayan’s, Ernakulam (K. Vijayan, Simon John, P.A. Zafar, Johnson, Mohan Menon, 95 VP).

Board-A-Match: 1. Remun’s (R.V. Subramhnyam, S.Vjayaraghavan, G. Rajagopal, Prajwal, 96 VP), 2. VR-5 (T.R. Krishnan, S.R.C. Sekar, Paul, Afshar Majeed, 92 VP), David Raja’s (David, T.M. Suri, Narayana Ayyer, Jagadeesan, 86 VP).

Pairs: 1. R. Sreekrishnan/Afshar Majeed (65 per cent), 2. Mathew Chandy/V.Bejoy (61 per cent), 3. Robins Jacob/S.Sreekumar (59 per cent), 4. S.R.C. Sekar/Vijayaraghavan (56 per cent).

Another win for Prathibha

Prathibha CC and Pataudi CC recorded their second consecutive victories in the Kollam District ‘B’ division cricket league here on Sunday.

Prathibha scored a facile 119-run win over Aviva CC while Pataudi CC crushed Dev CC by nine wickets. The day’s other winners were Zones CC, Lewis XI, KCC and GKFC.

The scores:

Zones CC 108 in 19.4 overs (Vinu 32, Sanil Kumar three for 25, Babu three for 14) bt Friends CC 36 in 14 overs (Akhil five for seven, Nauseen three for four).

Shino CC 135 for seven in 23 overs lost to Lewis XI 136 for six in 15.2 overs (Edwin 56, Shankar three for 17).

Prathibha CC 193 for nine in 25 overs (Arun Parameshwar 32, Rajagopal three for 15, Arun three for 24) bt Aviva CC 74 in 15 overs (Jayaraj three for 12).

Sapphire CC 135 in 23.1 oves (Ambu 31) lost to KCC 136 for seven in 16.3 overs (Vishnu 35, Sudhi three for 16).

Dev CC 69 in 12 overs (Balu three for 10) lost to Pataudi CC 72 for one in 14 overs (Anoop 33).

GKFC 100 in 17 overs (Vinu three for 20) bt CSSMCC 95 for six in 25 overs.

Basketball tournament

The 39th UC Trophy all-Kerala inter-collegiate basketball tournament, for men and women, begins at the Union Christian College’s C.P. Andrews Stadium, Aluva, on Monday.

Varghese John, the UC College Principal, will inaugurate the tournament at 4.30 p.m.
