Huge cache of arms seized in Jammu and Kashmir

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: Ahead of the Republic Day, security forces seized a huge cache of arms and explosives in two operations on Sunday.

The seizures, which included two Pakistan-made Anti-Personnel Mines and 13 mortar bombs, were made in Baramulla district of the Kashmir valley and Rajouri in the Jammu region, the police said.

On a tip-off, a team of police, Army and CRPF personnel raided Check-e-Mamoosa in Baramulla district and recovered a large quantity of arms and explosives from a stream.

The haul included more than 10 kg of RDX, 150 grenades and two Anti-Personnel Mines, SSP (Baramulla) Shakeel Ahmad Beigh said.

The arms, smuggled from across the border, were concealed in two water tanks. The weapons were meant for distribution among militants to create disturbances in the run-up to the Republic Day, Mr. Beigh said.

Mr. Beigh said the operation lasted four hours.

In another operation, the police recovered a huge quantity of arms and explosives, including five kg of RDX, in the Barsa forests, five km from the Line of Control, in Rajouri district.

During the searches, three Pakistan-made pistols, five AK magazines, 286 rounds of AK rifles, two grenades and 12 electronic detonators were seized. — PTI
