BJP Government has failed on all fronts: Hariprasad

Staff Correspondent

‘Central grants for relief and rehabilitation not used properly’

‘Congress has no role in resignations of JD(S) MLCs’

KPCC chairman seeks White Paper on State finances

Udupi: All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary B.K. Hariprasad said that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State had failed on all fronts.

Mr. Hariprasad told presspersons here on Saturday that the people had lost faith in the Government.

The State Government had failed to properly utilise the Rs. 500-crore grants released by the Union Government for flood relief and rehabilitation. He charged the BJP with using all methods to stall elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) from being held. The BJP was not confident of winning the polls. Hence, it had decided on a midnight operation to award tenders worth Rs. 3,400 crore after the BBMP polls were announced, he said. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa should apologise for this and the Urban Development Minister S. Suresh Kumar should resign.

To a question, he said the Congress had no role in the resignations of the two Janata Dal (Secular) leaders from the Legislative Council.

To another question, he said the Congress was opposed to acquisition of fertile agricultural lands for the Suvarna Project at Karkala in Udupi district.

Chairman of the publicity committee of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) G. Parameshwar said that the Chief Minister, who also holds the finance portfolio, should come out with a White Paper on the State’s finances. Mr. Yeddyurappa had completely messed up the finances of the State, he charged.

The D.M. Nanjundappa Committee Report had recommended that Rs. 16,000 crore be invested over the next five years to boost development in the backward districts of north Karnataka. Mr. Yeddyurappa had announced that Rs. 2,500 crore each had been set aside in the budgets of 2008-09 and 2009-10 for implementation of the report.

But, they had remained only announcements as no funds had been released, he said.

The State Government had failed to give expenditure certificate on the Rs. 500 crore released by the Centre for flood relief. It was essential to provide such a statement for seeking addition grants, he said.

Of the Rs. 1,000 crore collected through public donations for flood relief, the State Government had provided accounts for only Rs. 350 crore in the last session of the Legislative Assembly. The Government had still not started building houses in the flood affected districts of North Karnataka. School teachers were being paid salaries once in three months, Mr. Parmeshwar said.

Congress leaders Vinaykumar Sorake, M.A. Gafoor, Diwakar Kundar, Veronica Carnelio, Manjunath Udyavar, Dinesh Puthran, Ashok Kodavoor, Ignatius D’Souza were present.
