CUDDALORE: As many as 405 persons, including 97 girls, participated in a marathon here on Sunday. Superintendent of Police Ashwin Kotnis flagged off the event at the Anna Stadium. The marathon was organised by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, the district administration and the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. About 220 participants were school boys. Men ran for a distance of 15 km from the stadium to the Thiruvahindrapuram Government Higher Secondary School and back; women covered a distance of 10 km from the stadium to Kumarapet and back; and students covered a distance of five km from the stadium to Thevanampattinam beach and back. A health camp was held at the stadium for the past two days in which doctors from the government hospital screened the participants to check for physical fitness. The organisers said that the check-up ensured if the participants could withstand the rigours of the marathon. Those who did not undergo the test were not allowed to participate. The NLC had made contributions for giving away prize money to the winners. They would be honoured at the Republic Day function to be held at the stadium, sources said.
