BHUBANESWAR: For the Oriyas across the globe, the just announced national film awards have brought enough cheers to celebrate. ‘Jianta Bhoota’ (The Living Ghost), an Oriya feature film has bagged the national award for 2008 as the best film on environment and conservation. Produced by Muscat-based banker A.K.Parija, a non-resident Oriya and promoter of Oriya culture, the film has been directed by eminent Oriya actor-filmmaker Prasant Nanda while Mumbai-based internationally acclaimed Oriya cinematographer and filmmaker A. K. Bir has been its director of photography. Tribal cultureIt portrays the vanishing life and culture of the Dongria Kondh tribe inhabiting the Niyamgiri hills in Orissa’s Koraput region as a result of mindless mining activity and exploitation of the tribals by the so-called civilised people. The film claimed the awards for best production, best direction and best film on social issues at the 6th Independent South Asian Film festival hosted in the US recently. “It’s a rare honour for Orissa and the Oriya film industry. The film would not have been made without the unconditional support of the producer,” remarked its director Prasant Nanda whose Oriya film ‘Sesha Srabana’ had bagged the national award earlier.
