DINDIGUL: A Carnatic music festival and traditional dance festival will be conducted in March in the town to promote various traditional music and dance forms and propagate them among the youth, said Collector M. Vallalar. Inaugurating a Music Festival-2010 held here on Sunday, he said that vocalists and singers of Carnatic, Hindustani and Gazal will be invited to perform. Besides, the music festival will present rural music artistes and Thamizh Isai singers. On the last day, all performers will jointly present a musical programme like ‘Jugalbandhi.’ Similarly, various traditional dance forms will be presented in the dance festival. Traditional dancers of Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi and Odyssey will be invited to participate, he added. At present, the younger generation, particularly in rural areas, did not have exposure to these art forms. Moreover, television and films were their only entertainment. Music and dance festivals will certainly be an eye-opener and change their mindset on entertainment, he added. He also advised the festival organisers to publicise such programmes effectively to take them to the common man. Later, Mr. Vallalar conferred a title ‘Sangeetha Sevakara’ on renowned Mridangam vidwan P. Ramamoorthy, who has accompanied several leading vocalists and Carnatic singers in the State. He also distributed prizes to young vocalists. Budding vocalists sang Pancharatna Keerthana and presented a concert as part of Sathguru Sri Thiagaraja aradhana celebrations.
