Kozhikode
Kozhikode: The City Corporation Council at a special meeting here on Monday approved the beneficiary list of various schemes being implemented in the city for this fiscal. Mayor M. Bhaskaran chaired the session in the afternoon. However, the council decided to extend the deadline for submitting applications for getting benefits under a scheme for constructing compost pits to February 10. The decision was taken following the fewer number of applicants. Only 34 households had applied for the scheme this financial year. Last year the number of applicants was just four, said Kanangot Haridas, chairman, Health Standing Committee. Financial aidThe civic body provided a financial assistance of Rs.600 to each household for constructing compost pit for the safe disposal of waste. One of the basic requirements was that the applicant should posses at least five cents of land. The scheme was applicable to all categories of people irrespective of them being Above Poverty Line (APL) or Below Poverty Line (BPL) ration card holders. The scheme is to construct compost pit with specifications of one metre deep, one metre width and one metre length within the premises of their houses. The Corporation has been enthusiastically promoting the scheme as part of the solid waste management in the city. However, the residents have not responded positively to the scheme. Mr. Haridas said that councillors needed to start an awareness campaign in their wards to encourage people to take up the scheme.
