3 cops injured as seized bomb goes off

Ananya Dutta

KOLKATA: Three police personnel were seriously injured when a bomb suddenly went off in the store-room of a police station in West Bengal’s Malda district on Monday evening.

“Assistant Sub-Inspector Mukul Mohanta was in the room in which bombs seized during raids were stored at the Chanchol Police Station. He was being assisted by two personnel of the Home Guard – Atul Pramanik and Maqbul Hussain, when suddenly the bomb went off,” the Superintendent of Police, Bhuban Mondal, told The Hindu over telephone. The injured were brought to the Malda District hospital. The condition of Mr. Mohanta was very serious and doctors were operating on him, Mr. Mondal said.

Senior district police officials rushed to the spot. Based on preliminary observations it seems that the explosion took place because one of the crude bombs was not properly defused.
