Prakasam district selected for Sakshara Bharathi scheme

ONGOLE : The Central government has selected Prakasam district for implementation of Sakshara Bharathi scheme to help 4.18 lakh illiterates above the age of 15 years become literates in six months from March this year.

Addressing Republic Day parade here on Tuesday, district Collector, Kantilal Dande, said that the government has released Rs. 4.68 crores for the scheme.

He said that the buildings for medical college and hospital would be completed at a cost of Rs. 179 crores so that students can be admitted into Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) here from next academic year. Similarly, efforts are being made to construct a port at Motupalli, 1000 MW thermal power station and an air port at Allur near Kothapatnam.

The district has spent Rs. 1,885 crores till now on irrigation projects taken up under Jalayagnam at a total cost of Rs. 6,797 crore to provide irrigation to 4.6 lakh acres and stabilize five lakh acres. It has sanctioned 2.18 lakh pucca houses under Indiramma scheme at a cost of Rs. 752 crore and completed one lakh houses at a cost of Rs. 345 crore till now.

As the district received 29 per cent deficit rainfall this year, all the 56 mandals were declared drought affected. School children participated in several cultural programmes. District police enthralled the audience with demonstration of an anti-terrorist operation.
