Dr. P.K. Warrier MALAPPURAM: The bestowing of Padma Bhushan title is yet another feather in the cap of Aryavaidyan P.K. Warrier, managing trustee and chief physician of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala. Inspired by the multi-faced personality of his uncle Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier, the founder of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala and a pioneer of Ayurvedic renaissance in the country, Dr. Warrier displayed exceptional acumen in the administration of Ayurveda. Ever since he joined the Arya Vaidya Sala as factory manager, he was closely associated with the working of the institution. He became a member of the Board of Trustees of Arya Vaidya Sala in 1945. Following the death of Dr. P.M. Varier in a plane crash in 1954, he took the mantle of the Managing Trustee, a responsible job for 32-year-old P.K. Warrier. He continues to hold the positions of Managing Trustee and chief physician. During his stewardship, the Arya Vaidya Sala has grown tremendously, and has been recognised as a premier Ayurvedic treatment and research centre in the country. The Arya Vaidya Sala is today known for bona fide Ayurvedic treatment and research. Development projects are implemented with the objective of getting Ayurveda recognised internationally as a scientific system of health care of all-time relevance, capable of meeting the challenges thrown up by the passage of time and changing lifestyles. Nearly 30 per cent of the patients seeking treatment and care at the Ayurvedic Hospital and Research Centre, Kottakkal, are from foreign countries. As many as 1,143 patients from 44 foreign countries received treatment at Kottakkal in 2008-09. Stress on qualityDuring his tenure, Dr. Warrier made special efforts to take advantage of the scientific advances and technological innovations to upgrade the processes of medicine manufacturing with a view to enhancing their efficacy and ensuring quality of the products, always taking care not to deviate from the basic tenets laid down in the classical texts. Dr. Warrier saw to it that an efficient quality control laboratory was established to test and certify the raw materials and the finished products. He took initiative to organise research in different aspects of Ayurveda. Clinical research is his forte. A continuous sustained research programme in the field of rheumatoid arthritis and treatment and alleviation of pain in cancer cases is under way at the Arya Vaidya Sala. He is regularly invited for lectures by universities in India and abroad. Dr. Warrier is an exponent of holistic medicine. While practising and propagating Ayurveda as a scientific system of health care he recognises the validity of other systems.
