KANNUR: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that terrorism in the name of religion is the greatest challenge being faced by the country. Addressing the Republic Day parade here on Tuesday, the Minister said that the nation was gaining strength to confront the threat of terrorism. Terrorists were misusing religion, he said, adding that the nation would isolate them with the help of religious people. Central and State security forces were being strengthened to fight terrorism, he said. Coastal securityThe Minister said that the State government had taken steps to strengthen coastal security. On the basis of information that extremists were using forests in the State, the government was taking measures to counter them with the help of Forest and Police personnel, he added. The Indian Republic had survived many tough phases while many others all over the world collapsed. Mr. Balakrishnan said that India, functioning under the cardinal principles of sovereignty, democracy, secularism and socialism, had the strength to face all kinds of challenges. The country had been more democratised and secularised by the amendments introduced in the Constitution over the years. However, the nation had to do more to face contemporary problems. More had to be done in the Information Technology and knowledge sectors.
