‘District reaps a rich harvest’

Special Correspondent

GUNTUR: The adverse weather conditions in 2009 in Guntur district literally brought to a naught all efforts of farmers in producing paddy or cash crops. Delayed rains reduced 15 per cent of sown area. But despite that there was very high yield, said district Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu while delivering his message at the 61st Republic Day celebrations at the police parade grounds on Tuesday.

The sown area was likely to increase by 32 per cent in the rabi season, which would make up for all the loss the farming community incurred, he pointed out.

Unfurling the national flag and taking salute of the police and para-military contingents, he complimented the people for showing resilience in the need of hour when 14 mandals witnessed flooding.

The district administration declared 54 of 57 mandals drought-hit following lack of rainfall till August and subsidies given to farmers to begin their sowing activity all over, which fetched good results, he added.

Seed was given by spending Rs.2.43 crores and in rabi season 19,920 quintals of seed were distributed along with entire quantum of fertilizer required to meet the need at the right time.

Giving a report card of all the departments and programmes being implemented, he expressed satisfaction at the way they were being grounded, but asked the officials to work dedicatedly to meet targets before the financial year-end.

Inspector-General of Police KRM Kishore Kumar, SP Shankha Brata Bagchi, Joint Collector Gaurav Uppal also participated in the celebrations. A kolatam show turned out to be the main attraction.
