Madurai Division earnings up

MADURAI: The Madurai Division of the Southern Railway had registered an additional Rs. 42.59 crore earnings for the fiscal up to December 2009, said Divisional Railway Manager Anil Singhal.

Addressing the Republic Day celebration after unfurling the tri-colour at the Railway Colony here on Tuesday, Mr. Singhal said tht the total earnings, which was Rs. 308 crore last year up to December 2008, touched Rs. 350.59 crore during the corresponding period this fiscal. While passenger traffic earnings stood at Rs. 200 crore this year (as against Rs. 180 crore last year), the earnings through goods handling was Rs. 129 crore (as against Rs. 105 crore last year).

Development works worth Rs. 54 crore was in progress. Modernisation of Madurai railway station, including extension of the concourse, erection of escalators and additional shelters, widening and improvement of platforms were among them. Platform shelters would be provided at 25 stations and foot over- bridges at eight stations had been planned. Electrification between Tiruchi and Madurai was expected to be over by March.

Railway Protection Force personnel, Scouts and Guides, National Cadet Corps and students of Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School took part in a march past.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager T. Venkatasubramanian, and Divisional Security Commissioner M. Suresh were present.
