Seeking action: Students of the Zilla Panchayat Government High School at Montepadavu during the protest on Wednesday. MANGALORE: Angered by the failure of the administration to appoint mathematics and science teachers to Zilla Panchayat Government High School at Montepadavu since the last six months, students of the school and their parents locked the school on Wednesday and staged a protest. High drama followed after five girl students participating in the agitation fainted. The protest was led by district unit of Students’ Federation of India. The protesters did not allow Block Education Officer Sudhakar to enter the campus when he arrived for talks. They surrounded him and raised slogans against the Department of Public Instruction, the State Government and Congress MLA U.T. Khader. The students alleged that the headmaster of the school gave them mathematics and science question papers during an internal examination last week and asked them to answer the papers at home. Parents alleged that the headmaster had collected Rs. 150 from each of the 600 students in addition to the fee in the beginning of the academic year. “We were told that the money would be used for recruiting temporary teachers. The teachers have not been recruited yet, and we don’t know what happened to the money,” said a parent. Mr. Sudhakar assured the protesters that he would look into the allegations and submit a report to the authorities concerned within 10 days. The protesters have set a deadline of February 8 to meet their demand.
