Rail Wheel Factory takes eco-friendly steps

Staff Reporter

Efforts on to replace high-speed diesel with LPG in furnaces

Innovative steps being introduced to achieve economy in production

1,45,125 wheels produced till December last

BANGALORE: The Rail Wheel Factory, Yelahanka, is making efforts to replace the high-speed diesel with liquefied petroleum gas in its pre-heat and re-heat furnaces in its attempt to be more environment-friendly and achieve economy in production.

Disclosing this during the celebrations of the Republic Day here, factory general manager R.K. Upadhyay said the Rail Wheel Factory was introducing several innovative steps towards achieving excellence in production of rail wheels.

Those measures include in-house development of wheels on trial basis for electrical multiple unit and Holfmann Bush (LHB) coaches; in-house manufacturing facilities for ingots which reduce RWF’s dependence on outsiders for billets used in the axle shop and rationalisation of melt scrap mixture to reduce the dependence on heavy scrap.

Mr. Upadhyay said that RWF had produced 1,45,125 wheels, 60,017 axles and 44,609 wheel sets up to December 2009 against the proportionate targets of 1,42,774 wheels, 55,371 axles and 44,368 wheel sets set by Railway Board.

Compared to previous year, the average daily production had gone up by 4.9 per cent in wheels and 1.7 per cent in axles, he said.
