Making a point: Municipal Chairman R.Rajendran at a meeting of the Udhagamandalam Municipal Council on Thursday. Udhagamandalam: Steps will be taken to protect all the lands belonging to the municipality, said Chairman of Udhagamandalam Municipal Council R. Rajendran here on Thursday. Presiding over a meeting of the Council, he said that without delay the areas would be identified, surveyed and fenced. Boards would also be erected. The Self Disclosure Act would be utilised for this purpose. Earlier, R.Ilango (DMK) pointed out that the municipal lands which were unprotected attracted encroachers. Either the civic administration should safeguard them or distribute them among the poor. ActionWhile Vincent (Congress) underscored the need to construct compound walls around such areas, Vice-Chairman J.Ravikumar (DMK) said that action should be initiated before the encroachers put up structures. Mr. Ilango regretted that development works were not being implemented in various wards. Mr. Ravikumar pointed out that since the municipality lacked funds contractors were not coming forward to take up the works. Thambi Ismail (DMDK) complained that public conveniences were not being maintained properly and distribution of water was not satisfactory in his ward. He added that the stray dog menace had reached alarming proportions in some parts of the town. Mr. Rajendran said that steps were being taken to deal with the stray dogs problem. Sampath (Ind) said that manhole covers were missing in some parts of the town. Municipal Commissioner L.S.Girija and Engineer Ramamurthy took part.
