Udhagamandaam: The need to declare the Nilgiris as tourism zone was emphasised by Coimbatore MP P.R.Natarajan, while addressing a press conference at Coonoor on Thursday. Adverting to the role of tourism in ensuring the economic well being of the district, he said that after declaring it as tourism zone everything possible should be done to strengthen the sector. He said at all costs the interests of public sector units like the Hindustan Photo Films (HPF) and the Pasteur Institute should be protected. There was no necessity to stop production of vaccines at the Pasteur Institute. Steps should be taken to revive the ailing HPF and restore complete normalcy at the Pasteur Institute. Mr. Natarajan said that a lasting solution should be found to the long standing Section 17 land problem in Gudalur and surroundings. The government should ensure that international agreements relating tea, coffee and pepper did not affect the local farmers. He said that a padhayatra would be organised in the Nilgiris between February 25 and 28 to focus attention on the problems confronting the people of the district. On February 28, a conference would be held at Gudalur. State-level leaders would participate. On February 22, a demonstration would be organised opposite the Collectorate. Earlier, he visited the Pasteur Institute. Later, Mr. Natarajan addressed a public meeting at Coonoor. Secretary, CPI(M) Area Committee, B.R.Dharmaraj presided.
