NIT-C symposium to merge IT and biology

Staff Reporter

A platform for computer science, life science and statistics experts

Kozhikode: Delegates from more than 10 countries including the U.S., France, Canada, Australia and China have confirmed their participation in the International Symposium on Bio-computing (ISB) to be organised by the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) from February 15 to 17.

K.A. Abdul Nazeer, Program Chair, ISB, said that the organisers had received more than 100 papers from 14 countries spread across five continents to be presented at the symposium. The programme will consist of six technical sessions, one keynote speech and five invited lectures.

According to Prof. Nazeer, lecturers and presenters will focus on bioinformatics and biotechnology - two fields of study that bridge the gap between information technology and biology.

Eric Jakobsson, professor of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, Biophysics, Bioengineering and Neuroscience at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, U.S. will be the keynote speaker. He will talk on ‘What kind of graph is the Tree of Life? Insights from a domain/motif-based view of molecular biology.’

The event is jointly organised by NIT-C and Indiana University Purdue University, in collaboration with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and will be held at the Kadavu Resort, Kozhikode. According to Prof. Nazeer, the symposium is expected to bring together researchers in the areas of computer science, life science and statistics to a synergic platform for exchanging their ideas and to promote future collaboration towards the development of improved bioinformatics tools.

“A fruitful collaboration between computer scientists and life scientists will pave the way for more meaningful research in the area of bioinformatics, with the ultimate aim of improving the quality and comfort of human life,” said Mr. Nazeer.

Details of registration and other procedures are available at the ISB 2010 Website: http://www.isb2010.org. e-mail: contact.isb@gmail.com
